What Is Casual Loading?
Casual loading is a percentage added to the base minimum hourly rate to compensate casual employees for the entitlements permanent staff receive. Under most modern awards and the National Employment Standards (NES), the standard casual loading is 25% of the ordinary hourly rate. A worker with a base rate of $30 per hour would earn $37.50 per hour as a casual ($30 × 1.25).
The loading recognises that casuals have no guaranteed hours, can be rostered off without notice in many cases, and do not accrue paid leave. In exchange for higher hourly pay, casual employees trade job security and leave entitlements. The loading is not a bonus — it is a structural part of how casual pay is designed under Australia's industrial relations system.
